Register as an overseas elector
British or eligible Irish citizens living outside the United Kingdom can register to vote at UK Parliamentary elections. These electors are called overseas electors.
To register as an overseas elector you must:
- be a British citizen or an eligible Irish citizen* who lives outside the United Kingdom;
- be aged 16 and over (although you won't be able to vote until you are 18); and
- have previously lived in Northern Ireland.
*An ‘eligible Irish citizen’ is someone who was born in Northern Ireland, who is an Irish citizen and also qualifies as a British citizen (whether or not they identify themselves as such).
When you register as an overseas elector you must register at your qualifying address. This is either:
- the last address you were registered to vote at in the UK (this may not be last address you lived at if you did not register to vote at your last address); or
- only if you have never been registered, can you then choose to register at the last address you lived at.
You will be registered in the constituency that your qualifying address is in and you will be allocated to vote at the local polling station. You can vote in person at this polling station if you are in Northern Ireland on election day. Alternatively, you will need to appoint someone (known as a "proxy") to vote on your behalf.
