Eligibility to Register to Vote - Changes for European Citizens Living in the UK

  • May 07 2024

Today, the eligibility to register to vote changes for European citizens living in the UK following changes in law by the UK Government.

For citizens from Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal or Spain - your right to register to vote stays the same. This is because the UK has arrangements in place with each country respectively.

For citizens from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia or Sweden - you can only register to vote if you were legally resident in the UK before 31 December 2020 (the day the UK left the European Union). You will be asked to confirm your immigration status now when you register.

We will be confirming the eligibility of all existing European Union electors in due course.

For more information about the changes please see the Electoral Commission website.
